a friend of mine wrote a review of united 93, a movie i have not desire in seeing, over on a blog i contribute to every now again. it was rather well written, but i had the feeling of a little bit of bias, but hey, what movie reviews aren’t.
i was going to leave a comment but didn’t. here’s the comment i would have left:
why would i want to see this movie when i already know the ending? the plane crashes. the passengers are praised as heroes. followed by the president invading a country that had nothing to do with the crash or 9/11.
like i said, i didn’t leave the comment. do i kinda wish i did? yeah, but i know i would have felt the fury of many right-wing bushites that turn a blind-eye to mistakes of this current administration and blindly support the ol’ dubya in whatever he does.
my remark: “he went to war with a country that had nothing to do with the initial terrorist attacks.”
response: “but bush put a baseball field on the white house lawn for the kids.”
my response: “but he went to war with a country that had nothing to do with the initial terrorist attacks.”
response: “but hussein was evil. he has weapons of mass destruction. he was threatening our country.”
my response: “prove it.”
response: “he just did.”
my response: “it was reported that no wmd’s were found.”
response: “you can’t trust the media.”
my response: “you can’t trust the administration.”
response: “commie.”
my response: “whatever works.”
(little diarrhea of the mouth there. i apologize. its late. i should be in bed. i’ll leave you with the following:)
to quote my neighbor: “put a pothead in the office, everythings cool and groovy. put a cokehead in the office, everything is just all fucked up.”

1To the comment you would have left: To say there is no reason to see a movie when you already know the ending is disingenuous. Do you never watch a movie more than once? Have you never watched a historical film before? You passed up Schindler’s List because everybody knows the Nazi’s lose? Not to mention the rest of the formulaic crap that Hollywood puts out - who doesn’t know the ending to most of that schlock. Yes, we know it ends with a big smoking hole in the ground, but watching the events unfold is riveting.
As far as bias in the review, I think you are reading into it what you already know about me. The movie presents the story from a very, VERY objective viewpoint. We do see men preparing to hijack a plane, but there is no judgement made or implied. We also see the FAA, ATC and military making mistakes as they are completely unprepared to deal with the events of that day. The closest thing to a message or a slant I found in the entire film was at the end; most everyone is pretty certain they are dying, most everyone is praying to their god of choice. The hijackers pray to Allah, there are prayers in Hebrew, standard Christian prayers….. I saw that a bit as showing what happens in the name of religion, and what doesn’t.
I really think you should see it before you assign a bias to it, and you should try to read my review without projecting what you know of me onto it. Just because I am a Conservative doesn’t mean my opions are all wrong.
As far as “followed by the president invading a country that had nothing to do with the crash or 9/11″. Nothing in the movie or in my review suggested a link between the two. In fact, in all our dealings, the only one if us trying to make a connection between 9/11 and the Iraq war (by claiming no connection exists, interestingly) is you. Which one of us, then, is drinking the KoolAid?
I am well aware of the mistakes this administration has made, and those they continue to make. Unfortunately….
