i don’t really want to get political with my return to blogging. i view politics much like i do religion: you can’t have an intelligent discussion about either subject. basically, i try to stay out of it.
i have to admit, when i read this, i was little disturbed and perturbed that in a time when americans are getting gouged at the pump, and marines are being accused of premeditated murder in iraq, the geniuses in washington decide to go after something as weak as marriage between gay couples. this subject hits on the two major things i don’t like talking about. this whole proposed constitutional amendment is completely driven by religious right.
looking more into this, it is nothing more than a smoke screen in a mid-term election year. we saw this happen in 2004 when the entire debate revolved around the same-sex marriage issue. it caused and will cause each side to take a hard station because the republican political machine will push hard for this amendment to go through.
the same debate is being used as it was in 2004: we must protect family values and the sanctity of marriage. bush called this an “issue of such profound importance.” why is this so important? is this more important than oil tycoons basically stealing from the average american? is this more important than getting our troops out of a country that had nothing to do on the terrorists of 9/11? is this more important than getting the southeast rebuilt? if you said “yes” on any of these, then your priorities, like the president’s, are way out of wack.
here’s what i propose: if you want to have an amendment to ban gay marriage, then put in a ban on divorce in the same amdenment. “we don’t have an interest in re-electing a republican congress if they’re not willing to fight for pro-family issues,” peter sprigg of the family research council said. well, mr. sprigg, what’s more “pro-family,” two people who want to get married to help build a family, or a process that gets easier and easier every year to just tears families apart?
this call for a same-sex marriage just proves that the president and the gop congress thinks americans are complete idiots and can be fooled with a subject that ranks very low on the importance list.
you’ve been warned: the political smoke screen has been lit.
