today started out slow. i didn’t really want to leave the hole, but i felt i had a mission to do. after fartin’ around for a few hours, i did a massive search for a receipt for the dvd player i bought when i first moved in. i had purchased the extended warranty for it and the thing was starting to act up.
after an hour of solid searching, i found the receipt in one my plastic crates of crap. i packed up the dvd player and headed to best buy.
being the honest guy that i am, i brought everything that was included with the player. i originally purchased it open-box and it came with the hdmi cable. the cheapest this cable goes for at best buy is 55 bucks. i saw that and realized that i made a big mistake. when i grabbed the new player, i enquired about said cable. when i found out the player didn’t come with it, i formulated my plan to get the cable back from the old player… just ask for it.
to make a long story, i got a real kick-ass dvd player that plays everything including vcd, divx, memory card crap, and a ton of other stuff i’ll probably never use for about 20 bones. not a bad deal if you ask me.
i was on a high. i’d admit that i’m proud of myself for getting a great new dvd player. i popped in high fidelity and started basking in the glow of 55-inch john cusack movie madness.
my high was brought down when i booted up cnn.com and found this: comedian richard pryor dies at 65.
i was just thinking about pryor the other day when i was this best of snl thing on the e! network. they showed that skit he did with chevy chase where chase was interviewing pryor and started doing a word association with real extreme racial terms. i was offended by the ranking which i can’t remember. pryor was the one of the greatest comedians of our time. everybody since him has emulated his style including eddie murphy, chris rock, and martin lawrence. he opened the door for black comedians to show them they didn’t have to be like bill cosby. they could have their own voice.
richard pryor will be missed. i know he’s been essentially out of the scene for years now, but he was still around and as cynical as ever.
